What is DEX – Digital Employee Experience

After spending the last years working on Digital Employee Experience (DEX), I want to start this blog in 2025 to share my knowledge and experiences to help others.

A good way to begin discussing DEX is to explain what it means:

  • Digital Employee Experience refers to employees’ overall experience with the digital tools, platforms, and technologies provided by their organization.
  • It encompasses all aspects of an employee’s interaction with the digital workplace, including communication, collaboration, productivity, and knowledge sharing.
  • A strong DEX is essential for employee engagement, satisfaction, and productivity. This involves equipping employees with the right digital tools and ensuring these tools are user-friendly, accessible, and reliable.

As a member of my organization’s Digital Workplace team, improving DEX should be our top priority

Focusing on DEX means shifting our approach in IT services from a more arrogant “we know what you need” mentality to a humble one that emphasizes listening to our customers—our employees.

However, enhancing DEX requires support and engagement from various teams, not just IT, like:

  • HR: Crucial in processes like employee onboarding and incorporating DEX KPIs/OKRs that support employee satisfaction.
  • Finance: Helps in understanding the costs and ROI of implementing projects and initiatives to improve DEX and getting the budget for these
  • Marketing Team: Conducts internal communications to support DEX communications campaigns.
  • and most importantly – Top Management: Needs to recognize the benefits of DEX, such as improved employee satisfaction, retention, and higher productivity.

To start improving DEX in organizations, consider these steps:

1. Implement a DEX management strategy.

2. Calculate a DEX score.

3. Identify and address the IT/employee experience gap.

4. Shift from a service level agreement (SLA) to an experience level agreement (XLA).

To raise DEX awareness, I recommend reading more about the topic and considering the free certification available. It only takes a few hours, and I find it beneficial for anyone interested in DEX.
